Basketball totals betting: over/under, how to choose and check

A totals bet is a forecast of the combined points of both teams. Over wins if more points are scored than the line, under wins if fewer. Basketball offers many totals: for the whole game, for a half, for a quarter, and team totals.

Over and under: what to look at

To judge a line you need pace (possessions), the points each team scores and allows, and the scoring level of the league: averages in the EuroLeague and in lower divisions differ noticeably. Compare the line with the teams in the same league and season, not in general.

Quarter and half totals

At the half and at the end of a quarter the line is recalculated during play. What matters is what has already been scored and how much time is left: such lines change fast and cannot be compared with the pre-game line.

How to test your own idea

Pick a rule and test it on history: how many games, what win rate, what ROI at real odds. Small samples and fitting conditions to the past are the main mistakes.
